Here is where KillDisk stands against NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2
Rev. 2 defines three sanitization methods - Clear, Purge and Destroy - selected according to the confidentiality of the data. It no longer prescribes specific device-level techniques itself and instead directs readers to IEEE 2883.
In the current release, Active@ KillDisk's overwrite methods support the Clear method on HDD, SATA SSD and NVMe devices. One of our methods is named "IEEE Std 2883-2022 Clear" for exactly that reason. ATA Secure Erase is also available for supported SATA SSD devices in the KillDisk Industrial and KillDisk Linux versions. It uses the ATA command set and does not apply to NVMe devices. Every operation produces a per-device Certificate of Erasure.
One limitation is worth stating plainly: Rev. 2 notes that host-based overwrite cannot reach all storage regions on flash media because of wear levelling and over-provisioning. If your specification requires the Purge method on NVMe or other flash-based media, host-based overwrite does not satisfy that requirement. Purge on such devices requires the use of device-specific sanitization capabilities supported by the drive.
Our next major release will add NVMe Sanitize (Block Erase and Cryptographic Erase), with the device's capabilities confirmed before execution, completion status read back from the drive, and certificate content aligned with Section 4.6 and Appendix C of Rev. 2.
